Bianca Smith became the first Black woman to coach in professional baseball yesterday after joining the Boston Red Sox minor league team.
Her impressive resume include stints as the assistant coach and hitting coordinator at Carroll University in Wisconsin and as an assistant coach at the University of Dallas. She also interned with the Major League Baseball corporate offices as well as the Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers organizations.
According to reports, Smith had been considered a top candidate for the Red Sox job. It took less than a month for her to seal the deal after interviewing with several departmental heads.
This is a major accomplishment but Smith has bigger career aspirations.
“I don’t want to limit myself and I want to go as I can,” Smith said. “I want to continue to challenge myself and right now, that goal is MLB manager. I don’t see that changing anytime soon. … As much as I love coaching, I want to be in that position. I want to learn as much as I can to be in that role.”
