Ways to Practice Self Care at Home

With the onslaught of Covid-19 and states at varying levels of lockdown, there is still a feeling of unrest permeating America.  At stressful times such as these, it is even more important than ever to practice self care. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune! Here are some easy ways to feel better, no matter what is going on in the world.

1. Sleep

Although sometimes it’s the first thing to go, getting adequate rest is a key to practice self care. Sleeping gives you the resilience you need to tackle life’s little problems, as well as big ones. Whether you are getting 7-8 hours straight a night, or snagging a twenty minute nap, setting a routine of dimming electronics before bed will help your body clock function optimally.

2. Keep a Gratitude Journal

We tend to focus on the what-ifs and negatives. We’re human.  But in doing so, we end up overlooking all of the blessings we have. Taking a few minutes a day to write down three things you are thankful for can change your entire mindset. Life is made of moments, and focusing on the positive ones will make each day brighter.

3. Drink Water

From skin quality to optimal organ function, drinking enough water each day helps your body stay finely tuned. Scientists do not all agree on what the best amount is, but it is safe to say it is probably more than what you are currently drinking. One good estimate is from the Mayo Clinic, who advises 11.5 cups a day for women.

4. Exercise

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to benefit from moving your body. Whether doing  a yoga tape or taking a walk in the park, every time you exercise you are releasing endorphins and improving your mood. Exercise also strengthens your cardiovascular system and keeps muscles and joints loose and functioning.

5. Eat nutritious foods

Just like any machine, your body will function better if you fuel it properly. Eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats is the key to success. Sugars and fatty foods clog your machine and make you feel sluggish.

6. Mute your phone

Let’s face it. We all spend too much time connected to our phones, letting the text alerts and dings manage our day. By putting your phone away for a few hours, you can focus on who and what is right in front of you. This focus in itself is a form of meditation, and will calm you enough to tackle the situations you need to deal with on the daily.

7. Use your phone for good

Technology is not all bad, and there are several ways you can use your phone for good. Some ideas are to watch cute animal videos, utilize a meditation app, or even visit a virtual museum to get a little culture and relaxation. Using your phone in these ways can better ready you to face your reality, no matter what it entails.

8. Embrace nature

Scientists have long touted the positives of nature. Whether you love the forest or water or mountains, getting outside can boost your mood and productivity. Watching the sunrise or sunset offers both a sense of calm, as well as a sense of your place in the world. Bonus points if the sun is rising or falling  near water.
